The Story Behind Answers Tonight
Answers Tonight began while I was listening to another RoyRoy Genkins song, I Withheld. Something about that recording felt unexpectedly close to a worship song, and I loved the sound of it. That raised a question I had never really explored through music before: could I approach that kind of worshipful sound honestly from an agnostic point of view?
The question was already connected to a broader curiosity I had developed about faith, prayer, and the idea of a higher power. Andrew Huberman’s discussions about prayer had been part of that. I was fascinated by the possibility that prayer could have value whether someone understands it as communication with God, as something that affects the human mind and nervous system, or perhaps in ways we do not understand at all. I did not feel like I had to settle that question before finding the practice interesting.
This was not entirely new territory for RoyRoy. In the earlier song Fog Lifts Slow, I wrote, “Something came from nothing so I’m giving it worth.” That line still captures a lot of where I am. I do not know what brought existence into being, but the fact that anything exists at all feels extraordinary enough that I am reluctant to dismiss possibilities simply because I cannot explain them.
At the time I wrote Answers Tonight, I knew multiple families who were going through serious crises. These were situations where caring about someone did not necessarily give me anything useful I could do for them. Prayer began to seem less like a statement of what I believed and more like something I was willing to offer.
That is where Answers Tonight carries the thought from Fog Lifts Slow a little further. If I am willing to give the mystery worth, then maybe I am also willing to speak toward it on behalf of someone else. I do not have to resolve the origin of the universe, prove the existence of God, or decide exactly what prayer is doing before I can ask for mercy, comfort, or strength for people who need it.
I learned about other families facing difficult circumstances after the song was written, and that made the whole process feel even more valuable to me. The situations were different, but the impulse was the same. I still did not have answers, but I had more reasons to ask.
Answers Tonight is not a declaration that I found God or resolved the question. The uncertainty remains intact. It is about becoming comfortable enough with that uncertainty to reach anyway, especially when the reaching is for someone else.
Creative Notes
The song originally carried the working title While We’re Here. During development, Answers Tonight emerged as the stronger title because it better captured the song’s unresolved spiritual posture without putting overtly religious language on the cover.
The musical direction was intentionally informed by the worship-like quality heard in I Withheld. The goal was to preserve that sense of reverence and openness within the RoyRoy Genkins identity rather than turn the song into conventional contemporary Christian music.
The artwork followed the same restraint. The selected concept places a small solitary figure beneath an enormous night sky, using scale and the universe itself to suggest awe without relying on crosses, churches, prayer poses, or other explicit religious imagery. The standard RoyRoy Genkins title and artist text motif was carried forward from the existing catalog.

If the universe began with wonder Then wonder still remains In the space between the stars tonight And the beating of our names
If there’s anything that holds it all Anything that understands I’m not asking for the reason why
I don’t need answers tonight, just mercy for them I don’t need the why or how it ends If there’s a light that bends toward kindness Let it find them where they stand
I don’t need answers tonight, just mercy for them
There’s a man who’s carried more than words And a woman by his side There are children learning how to be brave As the days go passing by
And there are people gathered around them Love like an open hand Holding space, holding hope Doing the best they can
I don’t need answers tonight, just mercy for them I don’t need the map or when or where If there’s strength enough for one more morning Leave it waiting in the air
I don’t need answers tonight, just mercy for them
I don’t know who hears me when I whisper Or if these words go anywhere I’ve got questions stacked like stones I’ve carried them everywhere
But I’m here with open hands tonight
I don’t need answers tonight, just mercy for them No demands, no proof to show If there’s anything that listens in the quiet Let this be enough to know
I don’t need answers tonight, just mercy for them
