The Story Behind Banana Seat Summers
This song started with a simple memory: being a little kid in the 1970s with a plastic skateboard and an amount of freedom that feels almost unbelievable now. I could spend hours out on my own and travel surprisingly far from home before I was even in fourth grade. At the same time, home was not loose or anything-goes. My parents expected discipline. That contrast became the center of the song, a tightly run home inside a much wider childhood world.
As I kept pulling on that thread, the period came back through details rather than big statements. Hot summers, crowded bedrooms, one window air conditioner, trips to the PX, haircuts at the beauty college, bikes, scraped-up play, and the occasional trouble in the neighborhood all belonged to the same landscape. I did not want to pretend the world was kinder than it was. The difference was that we did not carry the whole world’s problems around with us every minute.
The title Banana Seat Summers came later. It felt stronger than the earlier working title Before Fourth Grade because it carries the period immediately and leaves the song room to be about more than one age. For Zed Wishless, I wanted the nostalgia to keep some dirt under its fingernails instead of turning into a sentimental postcard.
Creative Notes
The first draft leaned more Americana and also smoothed some memories into familiar nostalgia-song clichés. I kept correcting anything that felt too neat. The alley injury had been embellished, the idea that we had no rules was flat-out wrong, and the world was not always kind. Once the real tension became clear, discipline at home and freedom outside, the song got more specific and more honest.
The visual direction moved decisively into Zed Wishless territory. I used the distressed, retro poster language already established on other Zed covers, with the banana-seat bicycle as the central image and a sun-faded 1970s palette.

Plastic skateboard on a heat cracked lot Lunchbox dreams and sunburn spots Haircuts came from the beauty school Parents demanded discipline had rules
Six kids stacked in two bedrooms One window AC fighting off the gloom PX runs when the shelves ran low Stocked that freezer cold as snow
We had rules we had pride Still we roamed from dawn to night Miles from home on a banana seat bike Nobody tracked us we were fine The world was wild but it felt fine No Internet to steal our time
Finger cut in sword fight play Almost saw bone walked away Didn’t tell Mom didn’t cry just bled Put a Band Aid on went to bed
Neighbor kids with trouble eyes Cut my trike and fed me lies Dad came knocking strong and loud Taught respect right there and proud
Didn’t know rich didn’t know poor Just sweat and laughter chores and chores Rules at home but room to dream Summer’s heat and popsicle steam
We had rules we had pride Still we roamed from dawn to night Miles from home on a banana seat bike Nobody tracked us we were fine The world was wild but it felt fine No Internet to steal our time
We had rules we had pride Still we roamed from dawn to night Miles from home on a banana seat bike Nobody tracked us we were fine The world was wild but it felt fine No Internet to steal our time
Before the screens before the shade Life was free and unafraid
