The Story Behind Driving into the Sunrise
Driving Into the Sunrise came directly from a solo Sierra Nevada trip that began before dawn. I left home at about 4:35 in the morning under a nearly full moon, headed east on Highway 50 with a destination in mind but no real certainty that I would stick to the plan.
I sometimes think of these trips as personal maintenance. There was no major problem I was trying to solve that morning. I simply know that thoughts tend to move differently once I get into the mountains, and I wanted to give the day room to become whatever it was going to become.
The timing turned out to be exceptional. Overnight rain had left the mountains unusually fresh for summer, and as the morning developed the landscape kept changing with the light. The trip eventually carried me through the Loon Lake area and toward McKinstry Peak, but the destination became less important than everything happening along the way.
That became the heart of the song. It is rooted in a real day and real observations, but what mattered most was the gradual realization that the morning had already given me more than I expected long before I had finished the trip. Driving Into the Sunrise is less about reaching a mountain than about being awake enough to recognize what is happening while you are still on the road.
Creative Notes
The first versions leaned more heavily on the concepts of sunrise, gratitude, resilience, and light. During revision, the song was deliberately rebuilt using the more narrative approach associated with Chasing the Sunset. The writing process returned to the original notes and asked simple questions: Where was I? Who was with me? What did I see? What was said? What changed in me by the end? Specific observations were then allowed to carry the larger meaning instead of explaining that meaning first.
This also helped establish a broader songwriting method for future RoyRoy material: Story → Details → Reflection → Universal truth.
The artwork followed a similar progression. An initial mountain-road concept was created, then a second square cover was developed using an actual photograph from that morning near Loon Lake as visual inspiration, bringing the release imagery closer to the real landscape behind the song.

It was 4:35 in the morning Full moon in a clear sky No one moving in the neighborhood Just my headlights pointed high I had a plan, but no certainties Just a mountain on my mind Personal maintenance, maybe more If the thoughts started to unwind
I rolled east on Highway 50 Saw one deer and one runner in blue Placerville was barely waking McDonald’s lights came on right on cue The woman at the window was all business Working fast, doing fine And I pulled back onto the highway With the first orange on the line
I was driving into the sunrise With the dark in my rearview glass Everything ahead getting brighter Everything behind falling back I thought I was chasing daylight Up where the cold winds rise But the morning kept unfolding Driving into the sunrise
Past Pollock Pines the valley opened Fog tucked against the trees Logging trucks were rolling early Bringing timber down with ease The Sierras are best served with weather Late rain, early snow Rain and sun and changing seasons That’s when the mountains show
The shrubs were shining from the midnight No dust rising off the trail Golden meadows down below me Wet shale under my wheels And I thought if I turned back now I’d still have more than enough It was only 6:40 in the morning And my cup was filling up
I was driving into the sunrise With the dark in my rearview glass Everything ahead getting brighter Everything behind falling back I thought I was chasing daylight Up where the cold winds rise But the morning kept unfolding Driving into the sunrise
Some trees down in the valley Stretch for every inch of sun Some trees up on the ridges Look half-broken but not done Bent by snow and wind and weather Still green where the roots hold tight I guess strength don’t always stand straight Sometimes it leans into the light
I saw a mountain quail in the brushline Heard a call I’d never known Turned the truck around near McKinstry And sat a while alone I didn’t need another answer Didn’t need some grand design Just the grace to see the morning And know that I was doing fine
On the way back down the mountain The rocks hit harder than before Quarter tank when I made it home But I’d brought back so much more Not every road gives you a reason Not every climb explains your life Sometimes the dark just stays behind you When you keep driving toward the light
I was driving into the sunrise With the dark in my rearview glass Everything ahead getting brighter Everything behind falling back I thought I was chasing daylight Up where the cold winds rise But the morning kept unfolding Driving into the sunrise
It was 4:35 in the morning Full moon in a clear sky And before the day was over I had the sunrise in my eyes
