The Story Behind False Sunlight
False Sunlight came out of a day in the Sierra Nevada when the conditions themselves already felt unusual. There was still plenty of snow on the ground, but warm air had moved into the mountains and some places felt almost like spring.
Earlier in the drive I had been talking with my sister about a thought exercise she had heard described in an interview: imagine an outside observer watching how you actually spend your life. What would that observer conclude about what matters to you? I kept turning that idea over throughout the day, first personally and then more broadly.
Later I noticed what looked from a distance like a beam of sunlight reaching into a darker area beside the road. When I stopped and looked more closely, the source of the reflection was an old metallic balloon that had been sitting there long enough to deteriorate.
That moment stayed with me because it fit the other things I had been thinking about. We live inside families, cultures, political tribes, media environments, and personal histories that all shape what we think we are seeing. Sometimes something can look righteous, oppressed, balanced, hopeful, or true from a distance and become something very different when examined closely.
False Sunlight grew from that tension. The mountain experience is real, but the song is not intended as a literal account of the drive. It uses that observation as the starting point for a broader Sivra Dark reflection on moral judgment, false equivalency, self-reinforcing narratives, and the importance of continuing to look closely at what we believe.
Creative Notes
The earliest discussion considered several possible songs from the same day, including more personal RoyRoy Genkins ideas built around snow-covered roads and an outside observer judging how a life is spent. Once the focus moved toward the political and sociological observations, Sivra Dark became the clearer Artist identity.
The writing direction deliberately avoided naming current politicians, movements, countries, or parties. The goal was to make the song about the underlying human behavior rather than tie it to one political moment.
The cover developed around the central visual contrast: a dark forest, warm apparent sunlight, and a deteriorated metallic gold balloon on the ground. The typography was then aligned with the established Sivra Dark visual treatment used on Sanction Withdrawn, with distressed warm-gold lettering and the Artist name prominently placed at the top.

I saw the light break through the trees Thought it meant something sacred to me Golden beam on broken ground Like truth was waiting to be found
I walked closer to the glow Just to see what i should know Turns out faith can fool the eyes When hope is built on thin disguise
We chase reflections in the dark Calling sparks a guiding star
That wasn’t sunlight just a flare in the air Shining like meaning but hollow in there We build our faith on things that gleam And call it gold when it’s a veiled dream That wasn’t hope just light that lied Falling apart on the other side I stood beneath what i thought was true Just to watch false sunlight fade in view
They draw the lines in shades of gray Till right and wrong look just the same Every crime gets dressed in pain Every wound becomes a claim
They sell the storm as sacred rain Put halos on the ones to blame Say every side deserves a crown Even when one burns the town
We trade conviction for relief Calling silence keeping peace
That wasn’t sunlight just a flare in the air Shining like meaning but hollow in there We build our faith on things that gleam And call it gold when it’s a veiled dream That wasn’t hope just light that lied Falling apart on the other side I stood beneath what i thought was true Just to watch false sunlight fade in view
Some prisons don’t need walls or chains Just stories we repeat in pain We wear our wounds like proof of right And lose the will to seek the light
Not every fight is meant to share Not every truth is half of fair Some lines were clear before we came But we blurred them all in mercy’s name
If aliens watched us from above Would they call this wisdom or a flood Of noise that drowns what mattered most While we toast the loudest ghosts
That wasn’t sunlight just a flare in the air Shining like meaning but hollow in there We crowned the echo buried the voice Called every scream an equal choice That wasn’t hope just light that lied Falling apart on the other side I stood beneath what i thought was true Just to watch false sunlight fade in view
Maybe truth was never loud Maybe gold was never proud Maybe light that blinds the eyes Was never meant to guide our lives
