The Story Behind Five Months Later
Five Months Later began with Loon Lake, one of those places that carries its own history for me. I had been there in August, then returned in winter about five months later. The same granite and lake were still there, but the season had completely changed. The roads were icy, snow covered the ground, and the familiar place felt different without feeling unfamiliar.
That contrast gave me the frame for the song. I had been thinking about the weight of saying goodbye and how quickly time can move, but the winter return changed the center of gravity. I started thinking less about separation itself and more about what happens when time gives you evidence that growth is real. There is a kind of peace in realizing that distance does not automatically mean disconnection.
I wanted the ending to feel settled without feeling final. Time keeps moving, people keep changing, and a meaningful bond does not have to stay frozen in an earlier version of itself to remain strong.
Creative Notes
I wrote this one section by section, and one of the most important revisions was shifting several moments from an individual perspective into a shared one. Where the memory belonged to both people, I changed the language so the song felt lived together rather than observed from one side.
I also corrected the weather language in the first chorus when I realized I had made the sunlight sound emotionally colder than the day actually felt. That small change mattered because I wanted the song to stay true to the memory instead of forcing a mood onto it.
I kept Grab Those Moments in mind as a tonal reference, but I avoided direct lyrical callbacks. I wanted Five Months Later to feel connected by perspective rather than by repeated phrasing. The artwork followed the same restrained approach, starting from a real winter mountain photo and adapting it into the established RoyRoy Genkins visual style.
