The Story Behind Fog Lifts Slow
I headed into the Sierra Nevada after several days of rain and snow because the weather looked like it might offer one of those rare in-between days. The roads were nearly empty. Water was still shining on the rocks, snow was hanging in the trees, and sunlight kept finding openings through a much larger field of gray.
The most memorable part came after I reached a familiar little spur above the valley. Fog started moving up the mountain in separate waves. It never settled into one solid wall. It would drift through, thin out, open the view, then another bank would follow. I spent part of the afternoon simply watching the landscape appear and disappear.
That movement became the center of Fog Lifts Slow. What interested me was the difference between being surrounded by haze and actually being lost. I wanted the song to stay grounded and plainspoken, letting the mountains, weather, and gradual changes in visibility carry most of the meaning.
Fun Fact
The final cover is based on a photograph I took during the same mountain outing that sparked the song.
Creative Notes
I first explored the concept in parallel for RoyRoy Genkins and Nebula’s Pulse. The RoyRoy version felt more natural because the source material was so physical and grounded: wet rock, pines, snow, sunlight, wind, and fog moving through a real mountain valley.
I refined the song one section at a time. I made some of the early emotional language more metaphorical and softened a passage that made the earlier haze sound more dramatic than I intended. The goal was to keep the meaning present without over-explaining it.
For the artwork, I used my mountain photograph as the visual anchor and carried forward the established RoyRoy Genkins styling from Chasing the Sunset, with a vintage landscape treatment, cool blue-green atmosphere, warm sunlight, and large cream serif type.

Fog rolls up the ridgeline slow Flirting with the pines in the valley below I close my eyes feel the sun warm my skin Let the stillness start where the storms begin
There was a time when a soft fog found me Days felt blurred more than they used to be Moving through a haze on a trail worn thin Missing quiet signs calling from within
But the fog lifts slow And I rise with it Wave after wave Till the view goes vivid Shadows I carried Fade like ghosts in the trees The fog lifts slow But its finally clearing me
First tracks on a path nobody walks Me and these mountains having long talks Found my footing in the quiet up here Where the air cuts sharp and the mind cuts clear
Yeah the fog lifts slow And I rise with it Wave after wave Till the view goes vivid Shadows I carried Fade like ghosts in the trees The fog lifts slow But its finally clearing me
Something came from nothing so Im giving it worth Standing like granite on this piece of earth Fog lifts slow But I lift with it
Yeah the fog lifts slow And I rise with it Wave after wave Till the view goes vivid Shadows I carried Fade like ghosts in the trees The fog lifts slow But its finally clearing me
