The Story Behind Ghosts of Buttercup
This song came from remembering the trips I took as a teenager to Buttercup, Gordon’s Well, the Colorado River area near Yuma, and Algodones. Those weekends had their own culture. Dirt bikes, dunes, camp setups, long days outside, ridiculous fireworks, local rivalries, and machines that seemed impossibly fast all blended together into one kind of desert freedom.
Competition Hill was one of the strongest images that came back to me. At night, magnesium blocks could light up the valley while high-powered sand rails attacked the hill at speeds that were hard to process. It was loud, bright, mechanical, dangerous, and completely normal to us at the time.
What finally made the song work for me was realizing that it could not just be a list of old stories. The real subject was what youth did to the scale of everything. The fun felt endless, the danger felt distant, and even serious consequences did not always land with the weight they would carry later in life. That tension is what gave the memories more meaning than simple nostalgia.
Creative Notes
The first draft was much longer and tried to preserve almost every memory that surfaced. I eventually decided the song was carrying too much detail, so I cut the pre-chorus entirely, shortened the chorus, and removed several scenes even though I liked them individually. The shorter structure let the strongest images move faster and made the reflective turn feel more earned.
The artwork also went through several passes before settling into the Zed Wishless visual language. I kept pushing it toward a worn, graphic desert look with a dune rider, strong title treatment, and the rough vintage texture used across the project rather than a literal scenic illustration.

Buttercup dunes under busted up skies Gordons Well dust stickin in our eyes Rode to Algodones back before the border got tight Grabbed cheap tacos and fireworks that never looked right
Lit those sketchy M1000 knockoffs in the sand Shrapnel whizzin overhead too dumb to understand Zoners crowdin runs flags whippin in the heat Wed talk trash laugh hard claim the dunes like our street
We were ghosts in the dunes Letting gravity choose Burnin daylight to haze Riding reckless young days Back when youth felt endless under desert skies
Rain changed the dunes carved em weird overnight Riding felt like dirt tracks grippy and tight Camp chairs and coolers desert sunset luck And I got to drive his dads diesel four by four truck
On Competition Hill we burned magnesium blocks White fire lit the valley like we rewired the clocks Then the alcohol rails screamed up that monster grade High compression thunder in a quarter second fade
Not every memory stayed sunshine in the frame A day after we left a crash changed the game Neighbor hit the sand wrong never walked again I felt bad yeah but I was too young back then
Didnt have the wiring yet didnt hold things long Strange how youth shrugs off what later feels so wrong
We were ghosts in the dunes Letting gravity choose Burnin daylight to haze Riding reckless young days Back when youth felt endless under desert skies
Buttercup dust night like daylight in the hills Growing up slow in the roar of those thrills
