The Story Behind I Withheld
I had already released “I Withheld” through RoyRoy Genkins when I became curious about what would happen if I let another one of my Artists inhabit the same song. The RoyRoy version had a conversational, restrained quality that fit the writing well, but I could also hear another emotional possibility in it.
Corra’s Light gave me that second point of view. I kept the song itself intact and changed the musical frame around it. The female lead, softer piano and acoustic foundation, ambient textures, and gradual lift changed how the restraint felt without turning the song into something more dramatic than it needed to be.
What interested me most was that the song did not need a new message to feel different. A change in voice and musical posture was enough to reveal another side of the same material.
Creative Notes
The Corra’s Light version took more experimentation than I expected. I wanted the chorus to open up emotionally, but some generations pushed the vocal into an extreme upper register, while others introduced an unwanted lower male-sounding voice in a recurring section. I kept tightening the style direction toward a consistent feminine lead, a controlled range, and emotional intensity without vocal excess.
The cover artwork also became a deliberate contrast with the RoyRoy release. Instead of the dimmer fireplace treatment of the original, I moved toward a warmer, brighter interior while keeping enough visual continuity for the two versions to feel related.
This is the first Cover song in my catalog, and as of 9/13/2026 the only one. I have toyed around with others but covering songs with different artists didn’t work quite as well as I’d hoped. It took a while to avoid some issues with vocal range.

The room stayed warm Long after the fire burned down I remember sitting there Hands wrapped around a cooling cup Trying to look steady Like nothing was happening inside Like quiet was a choice I made on purpose
I learned over time That silence can wear a friendly face That holding back can look like patience From far enough away I told myself I was being careful Told myself I was being kind Never stopped to ask who I was protecting
I withheld Not out of anger Not because I didn’t care I withheld Because it felt safer Than saying what was really there I withheld And called it staying
Small changes don’t announce themselves They just settle in Days fill up with distractions Good reasons and better excuses Distance grows quietly While no one’s paying attention And closeness becomes something you plan for Instead of something that happens
I withheld Not because I didn’t feel it But because I felt it too much I withheld Built a wall I could live with Learned to lean against I withheld And watched the warmth fade
There’s a cost to being honest Everybody knows it They just don’t say it out loud But there’s a relief on the other side A breath you didn’t know you were holding A moment where the ground shifts And you find out what’s still standing
I withheld Called it patience Called it loyalty I withheld Until silence Started speaking for me I withheld And paid in moments We never got back
Nothing shattered Nothing burned Nothing dramatic to point to Just a space that kept getting bigger Where the truth Could have lived
