The Story Behind Mercy Underneath
This song began with a dream that stayed with me long after I woke up. What first looked ominous changed as I drew closer, and the experience ended not in fear but in overwhelming awe and peace. I kept coming back to the contrast between what something looks like from a distance and what can be revealed when I stop retreating from it.
For Corra’s Light, that idea naturally became more explicitly spiritual. I wanted the song to live in the possibility that faith is not always about being led around fear. Sometimes it is about being led through it, discovering that grace was present before I knew how to recognize it.
I came close to pulling Mercy Underneath from the catalog. It did not feel essential to me in the same way some songs do, and for a while I questioned whether that was reason enough to let it go. Then I realized a song does not have to hit me the hardest to be worth releasing. If it reaches one person at the right moment and gives them something they needed, that is enough reason for me to let it exist.
Creative Notes
I first explored the source material through RoyRoy Genkins, where the center of gravity was perspective, courage, and the idea of finding something beautiful beneath fear. When I moved the idea to Corra’s Light, I did not want to simply replace the language with Christian references. I started over from the original notes and let her faith shape the song from the beginning.
The first Corra’s Light pass leaned heavily into direct worship language. I then tried a version built almost entirely from the original notes before blending the two approaches. That balance gave the song a clearer Corra’s Light identity while preserving some of the symbolic language that had made the earlier exploration work.
