Names Have Teeth

A single by Sivra Dark. I take Sivra Dark deeper into the Words Weave Worlds fantasy arc with a dark, controlled song about names, identity, and the danger of giving someone power over who you are.

The Story Behind Names Have Teeth

After The Inkbound Gate, I wanted the next chapter to make the new world feel governed by rules rather than just atmosphere. Names Have Teeth became the first real lesson in how dangerous language can be there.

The central idea is simple: a true name carries power. That immediately creates a culture where people protect who they really are, travel under invented names, and understand that language can be used as a weapon. I liked how naturally that fit Sivra Dark. The fantasy setting is new territory for her, but the deeper question is still one she belongs in: who gets to define you, and what happens when someone else is given too much power over that definition?

I also wanted the song to work outside the larger story. Even without the fantasy lore, there is something real in the distinction between what people call you and what is actually yours to carry.

Fun Fact

Names Have Teeth will probably be my last song made with Suno 5.5. The newer Words Weave Worlds songs are being developed with Suno V6, so this track may end up marking the transition between the two generations.

Creative Notes

The first musical direction came in harder than I wanted. I kept pulling the arrangement and vocal delivery back because this lyric did not benefit from being screamed. The final direction favors clean, controlled vocals, a stalking pulse, restrained gothic-metal weight, and a darker atmospheric build.

The cover art went through a similar refinement. I moved Sivra into a hooded fantasy look, lowered her gaze, shaded her face more heavily, and kept the surrounding world focused on true-name magic, runic restraint, and the sense that she is learning the rules of a dangerous new place.

Listen & Follow

Play the song while you follow the lyrics.

I woke beneath a foreign sky Black earth on my hands A stranger asked me who I was I almost gave my name

They caught the answer in my throat Said keep that word concealed Give them anything but what is yours Some names are far too real

Give them a word Give them a lie Some doors open From the inside

Names have teeth Names leave scars Open hidden doors And wake what sleeps in dark

Call me what you want That doesn’t make it mine But say the name beneath the name And you can cross the line

Something moved beyond the trees Low shadow circling near The stranger never raised a blade Just spoke what it could hear

One word The creature froze No chain No blood No steel

I asked how language made it kneel They said Know the name Touch what is real

Names have teeth Names leave scars Open hidden doors And wake what sleeps in dark

Call me what you want That doesn’t make it mine But say the name beneath the name And you can cross the line

A name can crown you A name can chain A name can follow Long after blame

Every word they hand you Isn’t yours to keep

Say me wrong I walk away

Say me true And something stays

Choose your words

Names have teeth

Names have teeth Now I know Some should be spoken Some should never show

Call me what you want That doesn’t make it mine You don’t own the truth By naming what you find

That night I opened up the book

One name Where none had been

Something in the dark Turned toward me
