The Story Behind One Question Left
I started the writing session by asking ChatGPT for five heavy subjects I had not yet really tackled in my music. The fifth idea asked what a person is worth when they are no longer useful. That question caught me immediately, but the longer I sat with it, the less I accepted the premise.
Instead of treating usefulness as the measure, I started thinking about what actually survives a person: how love becomes behavior in someone else, how family stories shape another generation, how mistakes can become lessons, and how the best outcome may be for the people after us to go farther than we did. The idea shifted from being remembered to having something worthwhile continue.
What I liked most was that the exercise did not end in certainty. It moved from a practical question about usefulness into a much larger reflection on what we can know, what we can pass on, and what remains mystery. That felt like the right place for RoyRoy Genkins, sincere, grounded, and willing to leave the biggest question open.
Creative Notes
The first draft was much longer and more explicit. I removed the bridge and kept cutting anything that felt like an essay because the song worked better when RoyRoy sounded like someone thinking out loud instead of presenting a philosophy. I also softened a few phrases that felt too harsh or too polished so the voice stayed human and conversational.
Musically, I kept returning to intimate Americana as the center, with several directions ranging from bare acoustic to cinematic and lightly hymnal. The goal was not to turn the song into worship music. I wanted the arrangement to carry emotional weight and spiritual openness without forcing an answer. The cover followed the same idea, settling on an empty porch chair, warm light, a twilight sky, and a familiar quilt.

Did I do enough with the years I had? I sometimes wonder late at night Built some things and broke some things Got a few important ones right
Loved some people clumsy Loved some people well Learned a little slower Than I’d really care to tell
But if the ones I leave behind me Know they mattered all along Maybe that’s one question I can finally put down
I don’t need you to remember Every word or every mile Take the good and make it better Let the rest end where it fell
If you grow beyond my thinking If your children feel loved Then you carried something forward And that’s more than enough
A mother’s smile is still here Though you never knew her face Something warm crossed generations Without asking for its name
Funny how a life keeps moving Through the people that we love Maybe being carried forward Was always more than enough
Should you try to be like me? I hope you find your own way through Keep the backbone lose the temper Question what I handed you
Keep the wonder lose the pride Take what’s good and make it yours Don’t stop where the ones before you Had to stop before
I don’t need you to remember I don’t need you to believe You’ll find more than I can answer Carry forward what you need
Be better than the ones before you Leave better questions too I’ve made my peace with almost everything
There’s just one question left
When all this love keeps moving Long after we are gone
What lies beyond the mystery of it all?
