Stories of Christmas Past

A single by RoyRoy Genkins. A warm Americana Christmas song built from shared memories of family, homecoming, childhood wonder, holiday traditions, and the little moments that stay with us.

The Story Behind Stories of Christmas Past

Shortly after I had produced Season to Be Grateful, a friend suggested that I write a Christmas song, and the idea really clicked the next day at Rotary when our president asked everyone to share a Christmas memory. I realized I did not want to write one person’s version of Christmas. I wanted to collect the little things people actually remember.

I had one of my own memories to contribute, then I started asking other people for theirs. What came back was exactly the kind of material I hoped for: family being together, kids coming home, childhood wonder, food, noise, traditions, and the small bits of chaos that somehow become precious later.

That became the heart of Stories of Christmas Past. It is less about a perfect Christmas than the pieces people carry forward. The song is a collage of shared memories, with different lives and different years meeting in the same place for a few minutes.

Creative Notes

The working title was Christmas Memories. As the song took shape, I changed it to Stories of Christmas Past because the song had become more about collected stories than a single memory.

I also revised the point of view so the lyric clearly sounds like many people remembering, not one narrator claiming every scene. That was an important change because the whole concept depends on the memories belonging to different people.

The cover followed the same idea of warmth without turning the artwork into a literal family portrait. I first tried a homecoming scene, then moved to a people-free image inspired by a real photo of decorated Christmas cookies. The final direction became a square, rustic kitchen still life in the familiar RoyRoy Genkins visual style.

Listen & Follow

Play the song while you follow the lyrics.

We gathered round the stories let the memories take the lead Little moments from our lives stitched together like a wreath One remembered playing Santa bringing joy to those they love Others talk of basements full of cousins laughing loud enough

There were gifts and secret whispers while the grownups stayed upstairs Grandpas special holiday treats making kids feel mighty rare Some folks say the years went by and families spread across the land But those nights of being together still glow like embers in our hands

These Christmas memories shared from every walk of life Pieces of the heart we keep no matter how the years go by Lights that danced on winter nights the warmth of family All the love we carried forward In our Christmas memories

Someone said the best of Christmas was when both their kids came home Another saw a red light drifting by their window all alone Old enough to doubt the stories young enough to still believe That maybe Rudolph really passed in silence Christmas Eve

We hear talk of grandmas fudge and popcorn balls stacked high And turkey skins gone missing long before the carving knives A mother leapt with laughter when she opened up her prize Her very first game console pure delight across her eyes

These Christmas memories shared from every walk of life Pieces of the heart we keep no matter how the years go by Lights that danced on winter nights the warmth of family All the love we carried forward In our Christmas memories

Cookie dough and crowded halls the chaos that we loved A house too full for quiet but just right for feeling hugged Different lives different years but somehow all the same Every story leaves a candle softly burning in our name

These Christmas memories they’re the gifts we never lose Every laugh every whisper every old familiar truth And when the season finds us may our hearts agree Were richer than we ever knew In our Christmas memories
