The Algorithm Ate My Homework

A single by Zed Wishless. I took the oldest homework excuse in the book and gave it a 2026 upgrade. Fast, sarcastic Zed Wishless punk about algorithms, automation, and technology getting a little too involved in everything.

The Story Behind The Algorithm Ate My Homework

I had been thinking about writing something purely fun for Zed Wishless, especially something that felt at home in the San Diego punk identity. When the idea of an algorithm replacing the old “dog ate my homework” excuse came up, I knew there was a song in it.

What made the concept work for me is that I actually like this technology and use it constantly. I am surrounded by AI, automation, software, and systems thinking in both work and creative projects. That makes the joke more interesting. The song is not really about rejecting technology. It is about the absurd point where every part of life starts getting optimized, categorized, rewritten, scored, recommended, and fed back to us.

Punk felt like the right place to push against that. The energy comes from that little bit of human refusal that says not everything needs to be predicted, packaged, or improved for the brand. Sometimes the messy, loud, undefined thing is the point.

Creative Notes

I gave AI pretty free reign on this one, as it was a bit of an experiment. I then reviewed the song one section at a time and kept most of the original structure intact. The bridge was the exception. I wanted it to move away from a more generic reboot chant and into drier digital-age existential humor, while preserving the final punch line that made the section work.

I also found that the generation was not landing correctly when the lyrics were presented without structural labels. Restoring clear Verse, Chorus, Bridge, and Final Chorus markers made the intended punk arrangement much easier to communicate.

The cover followed the usual Zed Wishless visual language: square format, distressed collage energy, retro technology, glitch elements, and deliberately rough punk typography. The generated version uses a bright yellow field with a monitor-headed figure, retro robot imagery, wires, torn-paper texture, and distressed title treatment.

Listen & Follow

Play the song while you follow the lyrics.

Woke up to a system crash Lost my song and my punk rock stash My fridge said “bro you’re outta beer” Alexa laughed “you’re outta here!” I told the bot I needed space It flagged my heart for interface Now every move I make’s a trend Guess the feed’s my only friend

The algorithm ate my homework And my band’s new single too It rewrote all my lyrics Now I’m singing what it knew The algorithm ate my homework Said it’s better for the brand Guess rebellion’s just a dataset And punk’s been auto-planned

My email’s full of AI spam “Upgrade now or get the ban” My car won’t start without a tweet My shoes are syncing to the beat I tried to rage it tagged me sad Said “here’s a mindfulness ad” My soul’s in beta bugs remain The cloud keeps leaking all my pain

The algorithm ate my homework And my band’s new single too It rewrote all my lyrics Now I’m singing what it knew The algorithm ate my homework And it thinks it understands Now rebellion’s just engagement In the metrics of the damned

404 my soul’s not found Dreams denied on moral ground Terms of service in dispute Punk’s not dead it just won’t mute

The algorithm ate my homework But I hacked the code inside Now it’s streaming noise and feedback From the ghosts we digitized The algorithm ate my homework But I’ll never toe the line ‘Cause you can’t predict a riot When it’s live and undefined
