The Wind Still Moves

A single by RoyRoy Genkins. I built The Wind Still Moves around Sierra wind, burned pines, and the quiet idea that change can carry both loss and renewal.

The Story Behind The Wind Still Moves

This song came together during a day of driving and wandering through the Sierra Nevada. I stopped near a creek and waterfall for a while, then noticed something simple as I walked away: the sound of the water gradually disappeared and the wind took over. In the tall conifers it had its own deep rush and whisper, almost like the landscape had changed voices without ever becoming silent.

The rest of the day kept adding to that feeling. A hawk called across a canyon. Ravens rode the higher air. Dry mountain leaves rattled loudly enough to sound for a moment like something moving nearby. In areas burned by the Caldor Fire, thousands of trunks stood blackened and pale against the mountain light. One thought stayed with me in particular: even dead trees can sometimes provide shade.

I kept coming back to the emotional balance in those observations. A place can carry damage and beauty at the same time. Quiet can still contain motion. Something can change without becoming empty. That became the heart of The Wind Still Moves, a song about looking honestly at what has changed while still leaving room for hope.

Creative Notes

The earliest drafts leaned more heavily on explanation. I kept revising toward simpler imagery and let the landscape do more of the emotional work. Several observations from the day helped define the song’s world even when they did not all need to appear in the finished lyric.

I reviewed the song section by section and made small wording changes to keep the voice natural and grounded for RoyRoy Genkins. I also revisited the bridge late in the process because its final cadence needed a cleaner sense of continuation and repair.

The cover followed the same direction. I chose a square, vintage Americana-style Sierra landscape with fire-scarred trees, distant mountains, muted natural tones, and a mood that feels reflective rather than bleak.

Listen & Follow

Play the song while you follow the lyrics.

I’ve carried storms behind my eyes Held the weight of tough goodbyes Every dream that cracked and bent Still left its roots in the firmament Now I wander where the ashes gleam Charred and golden, like an old day’s dream The wind still moves through what remains Whispers low, There’s love in change

And the wind still moves through broken pines Sings of loss and what survives Every scar that’s touched by light Tells the soul it lived its fight I can’t hold the world, but I can choose To feel it pass, the wind still moves

I’ve known the silence of empty rooms Where echoes bloom like ghost perfumes But even there, the heart can mend By hearing how the quiet bends Old regrets fade soft and slow Like rivers thawing under snow The wind still moves, it calls my name And nothing sacred stays the same

And the wind still moves through broken pines Sings of loss and what survives Every scar that’s touched by light Tells the soul it lived its fight I can’t hold the world, but I can choose To feel it pass, the wind still moves

If peace is just the breath between The sky and all I’ve been Then I will stand where earth has burned And feel the pulse resume and mend

For the wind still moves through broken pines And carries home what pain refines Even in the quiet, truth renews And life goes on, the wind still moves
