The World You Never See

A single by Sivra Dark. I made a hard rock and alternative metal song about the difference between the world that gets our attention and the much larger world going on beyond the screen.

The Story Behind The World You Never See

I had been thinking about the way the most visible behavior can start to feel like the most common behavior. Spend enough time looking at what gets shared, argued over, and amplified online, and it becomes easy to mistake that small, highly charged window for the world itself.

The question that stayed with me was what this does to our perception of other people. There are genuinely good people and genuinely bad people, and I don’t think it helps to pretend otherwise. The ugliness we encounter is not necessarily invented. But neither does its visibility make it the whole story. So many people go about their lives, work, help, struggle, make difficult choices, and try to do the right thing without asking anyone to watch.

I wanted The World You Never See to sit inside that tension. It reflects a concern about how our picture of humanity can be shaped by what attracts attention, and a curiosity about everything happening outside the frame. I liked the idea of a Sivra Dark song that could confront something dark without letting it define everything else.

Creative Notes

I tried a remarkable number of musical directions for this one. I kept finding promising versions, covering them, and experimenting again. I explored dark electronic rock, industrial and alternative metal, grunge, and several less familiar directions, but the right combination was elusive.

The turning point was going back to Sivra Dark’s earlier hard rock and alternative metal roots. I took a version whose sound I already liked and covered it using a modified form of one of my original Sivra Dark style blocks. That brought back the smoky lower register, gritty blues-rock edge, aggressive midrange, and powerful layered female chorus vocals I had been missing. The process reminded me that sometimes the way forward is to revisit the sound that made an artist work in the first place.

Lyrics

A stranger says the world’s gone rotten From a room I cannot place Half a million people watch him Put a villain to a face

By morning there’s another And the verdict starts again I used to think I saw the world Now I see what draws me in

Every day another outrage Every night another side And the quiet lives between them Have nowhere left to hide

There’s a world you never see Beyond the fighting on the screen The darkness isn’t make-believe It’s just not all there is

And the loudest voices fill the frame Till they’re all we can believe But there’s so much more of us In the world you never see

There’s a woman leaving night shift With her lunch still in her bag Two old friends avoid a subject Neither one knows how to ask

Someone’s trying to forgive Someone’s learning when to leave And a million ordinary lives Go on where no one sees

No one’s counting all the kindness No one’s filming all the doubt It’s the things we do when no one’s watching That the picture leaves out

There’s a world you never see Beyond the fighting on the screen The darkness isn’t make-believe It’s just not all there is

And the loudest voices fill the frame Till they’re all we can believe But there’s so much more of us In the world you never see

They never had to change the world They only changed the view A handful of the ugliest moments Could start to look like truth

I wonder who I’d recognize If all the glass went dark If I could meet a stranger Without meeting their worst part

There’s a world you never see Beyond the fighting on the screen The darkness isn’t make-believe It’s just not all there is

And the loudest voices fill the frame But they’re not all we’re meant to be There’s a whole world still out there A world you never see

A world you never see Until you look away
