The Story Behind Walls We Had to Build
Walls We Had to Build came from thinking about whether some people can become so dangerous that society has no responsible choice except to keep them separated from others. The difficult part was not the idea of consequences itself. It was the question that follows: once someone has crossed certain lines, how do you protect everyone else without deciding that the person has ceased to be human?
That tension became the center of the song. Redemption and release are not necessarily the same thing. A person might change, regret what they have done, or become something different inside, while society still cannot responsibly take the chance that the harm will happen again. The families and victims of the original act also remain part of that moral equation.
The song ultimately sits in that uncomfortable space between free will and restraint. It asks whether a door to redemption can remain open in principle even when the physical walls have to remain standing.
Fun Fact
During development, the AI side of the writing conversation consistently left more room for redemption than I initially did. That disagreement became part of what made the concept interesting rather than turning it into a simple argument for punishment.
Creative Notes
The concept was first explored as a Drown Wake song, but it was later moved to Sivra Dark. The darker philosophical weight and moral ambiguity felt more at home in her voice.
The visual direction also had to be reset during development. Early cover attempts borrowed too literally from prior Sivra Dark references, including imagery that belonged to other songs. The final direction was rebuilt around this song’s own central image: imposing walls, separation, distance, and the uneasy necessity behind them.

Play the song while you follow the lyrics.
Born with fire in the marrow Hands could shape or break the bone Crowds chant order call it mercy Teach you what to fear alone Every face becomes a mirror Showing what you won’t admit How the line you swore was sacred Can bend until it finally splits
Is it madness is it malice Or a tribe that tightens claws When the choice to look with clear eyes Is the hardest human law
So we built the walls around you Not because your worth was gone But because the harm you carried Could not walk the streets at dawn Maybe grace will bloom in shadows Maybe change will take its time But the world can’t risk the children On a hope that isn’t prime
Some are wired thin as razors Born where empathy runs dry Others carved that hollow slowly Fed by loyalty and lies Either way the truth is brutal Knowing love can’t cure all things Some redemption has to happen Where the world is locked and rings
If free will still burns inside you Let it light what you’ve undone We can’t hand you back the city But we won’t deny the sun
So we hold the walls around you Not to damn you not to spite Only so the ones who breathe here Wake to gentle unscarred light If you change we’ll never see it But we keep a silent vow Even those who’ve fallen deepest Still deserve a maybe now
