We Are the Backup

A single by Zed Wishless. A sarcastic Gen X survival anthem about the generation that nobody came to save, so they became the backup.

This song started with a challenge I posted on Facebook. My friend and fellow Gen Xer Joy did a bunch of research and pulled together a huge collection of Gen X references, memories, jokes, warnings, and cultural touchstones. I used that source material to feed the machine and shape the song.

The heart of it became the idea that Gen X learned early that nobody was coming to save us, so we became the backup. That one thought pulled everything else into place: hose water, streetlights, latchkey afternoons, pay phones, dial-up, white vans, quicksand traps, microwave dinners, sarcasm, disappointment, and the strange pride of figuring things out without instructions.

Zed Wishless was the perfect persona for this one. In my musical world, he carries that gritty, sarcastic, late-80s/90s Gen X attitude better than anyone.

Creative Notes

The goal was to avoid making this a simple nostalgia checklist. The references are there, but they work as shrapnel around the bigger idea: Gen X did not just survive a weird childhood; they became the people who keep things running when everyone else is still looking for the manual.

The tone needed attitude. Funny, but not goofy. Proud, but not sentimental. The song is built around the line:

“Nobody came to save us, so we became the backup.”

Lyrics

We drank from the hose And we lived to complain Burned our legs on the slide Then we did it again No helmets, no tracking No cellular phones Just a key on a shoelace And a walk home alone

We were raised by the streetlights And whatever was on Microwave dinner With the TV left on They said watch for white vans And quicksand traps Like the world had a plan It was mostly just cracks

Nobody came to save us Nobody had our back Nobody read the manual So we learned it in the crash

We are the backup We are the last call We are the ones still standing When the pretty plans fall No gold stars, no rescue No parade coming through You broke the whole damn system Now we’re fixing it for you

Whatever

We had pay phones and dial-up And a bad attitude DARE said don’t do drugs Then the grown-ups all sued We got cartoons with morals And playgrounds with scars We had mixtapes and static And hand-me-down cars

We don’t trust your trust falls Or your team-building crap We don’t need a life coach Who just downloaded an app We can smell fake happy From a mile down the road We were born disappointed So we travel light-load

Nobody came to save us Nobody cleared the track Nobody made it softer So we made ourselves adapt

We are the backup We are the last call We are the ones still standing When the pretty plans fall No gold stars, no rescue No parade coming through You broke the whole damn system Now we’re fixing it for you

We are the backup The duct tape and the wire The joke before the bad news The coffee on the fire We are the backup The grin behind the bruise You can call us whatever But you still call us when you lose

We act like we don’t care That’s not exactly true We just learned to care in ways That don’t explain themselves to you We don’t cry in the meeting We don’t clap for the plan We just find the exit And do what we can

No one came to save us So we quit waiting around We became the backup When the whole thing hit the ground

We are the backup We are the last call We are the ones still standing When the pretty plans fall No gold stars, no rescue No parade coming through You broke the whole damn system Now we’re fixing it for you

We are the backup Yeah, we’re the last call Still laughing in the basement While the ceiling starts to fall No gold stars, no rescue No one coming through Nobody came to save us So we became the backup crew

Whatever We survived
