The Story Behind Against Impossible Odds
I had been thinking about the astonishing chain of circumstances behind any one person’s existence. So many small decisions, chance meetings, missed opportunities, and ordinary moments had to unfold in particular ways for any of us to be here. The more I thought about it, the more remarkable an unremarkable morning began to seem.
What interested me wasn’t calculating those odds. It was the gap between recognizing how improbable life is and the way we actually spend our days. I can understand intellectually that time is limited and still catch myself treating it as though there’s an endless supply. That tension became the starting point for Against Impossible Odds.
I wanted to approach it with gratitude, but without turning it into a lecture. There is something quietly unsettling and hopeful about realizing that an ordinary life is already an extraordinary thing. I wanted the song to leave enough space for someone else to bring their own experience to it.
Fun Fact
This was the third idea on a list of songs drawn from my recent conversations with ChatGPT. The very first musical version connected with me so strongly that I soon described the song as one of my all-time favorites.
Creative Notes
I stayed unusually close to the first lyric draft. The main revision replaced a coffee-and-window scene because the imagery felt too close to another Drown Wake song, Soak It In. I kept the song’s larger structure and emotional direction intact instead of rewriting something that already felt right.
The final style direction was a steady 88 BPM indie alternative rock feel: warm fingerpicked acoustic guitar, melodic clean electric guitar, deep bass, and organic drums that grow into a fuller band sound. I wanted intimate, slightly weathered vocals and a natural, spacious studio atmosphere. For the cover, I explored a lone figure overlooking a vast landscape at dawn and refined the branding against references from existing Drown Wake releases.
Lyrics
Someone stayed an extra hour Someone missed the last train home Someone almost walked away But couldn’t bear to be alone
Every turn I never witnessed Every hand I never saw Had to find its way together For me to be here now
Against impossible odds I opened up my eyes To another ordinary morning Underneath an endless sky
And I have spent too many hours Like the hours can’t be lost But I’m here, and that’s a wonder Against impossible odds
No parade for being human No applause for waking up I was busy chasing something While the day slipped out the door
I can fill a day with nothing I can lose it in a thought And the sun will keep on setting Whether I was there or not
Against impossible odds I opened up my eyes To another ordinary morning Underneath an endless sky
And I have spent too many hours Like the hours can’t be lost But I’m here, and that’s a wonder Against impossible odds
I’ve seen a life go sideways One small bargain at a time Nobody sets out to lose it Nobody plans to leave it behind
Maybe that’s what makes me careful Maybe that’s what makes me stop Every choice becomes a story And the days are all we’ve got
There were so many ways to miss this So many doors that could have closed I can never count the reasons Or the roads I’ll never know
And the day won’t last forever That’s the one thing I can trust Something rare is happening here Even if it looks like us
Against impossible odds I opened up my eyes To another ordinary morning Underneath an endless sky
And I don’t know what’s tomorrow I don’t know what time I’ve got But I’m here, and that’s a wonder Against impossible odds
No parade for being human Just this life worth showing up for Against impossible odds I don’t want to miss it anymore
