The Story Behind At the Edge of Sleep
I woke up thinking about that strange territory between dreaming and waking, the place where a sound can feel bigger than it is, a dream can still be within reach, and your mind has not fully decided whether it is in the world of sleep or the waking world. The more I sat with it, the more I realized how much human experience seems to pass through that threshold. Fear can live there. Wonder can live there. So can memory, instinct, desire, and the sudden feeling that some older part of us is already awake and listening before the rest of us has caught up.
That became the heart of this song. I was interested in the way the edge of sleep can make us feel both more vulnerable and more ancient. It is a place where you can briefly sense the old survival wiring underneath modern life, but it is also where ideas can surface in a way that feels unusually clear and meaningful. I kept coming back to the thought that some of our most unsettling moments and some of our best ideas may come from the same narrow border.
At the Edge of Sleep is my attempt to hold onto that feeling long enough to turn it into music. It is less about one event than about that whole threshold itself, the moment when the house is quiet, the night still feels present, and the mind has not fully crossed back into daylight.
Fun Fact
The original note session for this song started in the middle of the night and kept unfolding for roughly half an hour, which is a big part of why this release ended up with so much more creative history behind it than I first expected.
Creative Notes
I originally approached this idea in RoyRoy Genkins territory because the concept fit naturally with an acoustic, reflective style, but I eventually moved it into Drown Wake as I kept leaning toward a darker and more intimate version of the song. I also tested Zed Wishless variations along the way, and one of those versions was strong enough that I remixed it back into Drown Wake because of its cinematic build.
This was one of the harder songs to settle. I had several versions I genuinely liked, but none of them arrived as the obvious instant keeper that sometimes makes the choice easy. In the end I chose the more cinematic and dramatic Drown Wake version because it gave the release more variety while still preserving the acoustic core I wanted.
Designing the cover was also more challenging than usual, because a simple image of someone looking out a window at night leaves a surprising amount open to interpretation.

Listen & Follow
Play the song while you follow the lyrics.
At the edge of sleep The house is not the same Every little sound can wear A stranger’s face or name
For half a breath you’re somewhere else Before the room comes right Something older wakes in you And listens to the night
At the edge of sleep We’re closer to the fire Closer to the fear Closer to desire
Closer to the ones we love And everything we keep There’s a whole world waiting At the edge of sleep
At the edge of sleep A dream is still alive You hold it like a little flame Before it leaves your mind
A child cries in another room A floorboard gives a sound Something in you wakes before You know what woke you now
Sometimes you wake with wonder Sometimes you wake with fear Sometimes the thing you dreamed about Becomes the reason you are here
At the edge of sleep We’re closer to the fire Closer to the fear Closer to desire
Closer to the old world Still moving underneath We meet the ones we used to be At the edge of sleep
