The Story Behind Becoming Real
Becoming Real began during a real late-spring drive into the Sierra Nevada following a night of thunderstorms. The weather over the mountains was completely uncertain, which was part of the attraction. There was a genuine hope that climbing high enough might still uncover a little winter.
That happened. Rain gave way to cold air and late-season snow as the forest roads climbed higher. Once away from the main road, the mountain was empty. There were no other people, no fresh tracks, and only the evidence of winter left behind in damaged trees, deadfall, wet granite, and snow settling into the rough road.
The trip also returned to an area connected to Becoming Still, an earlier RoyRoy Genkins song about slowing down enough to recognize that personal change had begun. Revisiting that emotional landscape revealed something different this time. There was no comparable need for a breakthrough. The uncertainty, solitude, cold, careful driving, warm food, and changing weather simply felt comfortable.
That became the reason for the title. Becoming Real is about recognizing that what once felt like a process of becoming has settled into everyday life. The song draws from a real experience and real personal reflection, while shaping those experiences into a RoyRoy Genkins narrative rather than attempting to document the trip literally.
Creative Notes
Early drafts leaned too heavily toward another revelation occurring on the mountain. That direction was deliberately abandoned because the important creative distinction was that the change had already happened. The final concept became recognition rather than transformation.
The writing was also revised substantially for musical cadence. More prose-oriented drafts created inconsistent pacing in generation, so the lyric structure was tightened into shorter, more regular lines while preserving the conversational storytelling style. Geographic references and unnecessary route details were reduced when they distracted from the experience.
The song was developed as a companion to Becoming Still without reusing its specific imagery or lyrical devices. Shared emotional continuity was retained, but direct callbacks, including wildlife imagery from the earlier song, were intentionally avoided so Becoming Real could stand as a new chapter rather than a rewrite.

Thunder rolled the night before Rain still falling through the pines Clouds hung low along the ridge Could’ve been sun or freezing white
I headed up to see for myself What the mountains had in mind Half the reason that I went Was hoping snow was still up high
The road climbed slow past broken stone Pavement fading into shale Right around the cedar line Cold air fogged the window pale
Funny what feels like home these days Snow in May on mountain grades Thirty-three degrees feeling fine Gray sky hanging over pine
Hot drink warming up my hands Fresh snow settling on the land Somewhere on that mountain drive I felt more than just alive
Didn’t see a single soul Once I left the lower roads No fresh tracks across the white Just quiet settling in slow
Deadfall pushed off to the side Winter’s weight still in the trees Soft snow filling in the rocks Taking edges off the steep
I rolled easy through the climb Four high carrying me through Years ago I would’ve rushed Now I let the road just move
Funny what feels like home these days Snow in May on mountain grades Thirty-three degrees feeling fine Gray sky hanging over pine
Hot drink warming up my hands Fresh snow settling on the land Somewhere on that mountain drive I felt more than just alive
I still build and I still chase Still stay up too late some nights Still get lost inside my head Still work to get things right
But something settled over time Maybe somewhere in these hills Life stopped feeling like a race I stopped trying to force the wheel
Now I just ease along the grade Watch the weather drift and shift Finding patience taking time Bringing peace in my life
Funny what becomes your life Slow roads under fading light Snowflakes drifting through late spring Cold air carrying everything
Clouds broke open heading down Last light moving through the ground Somewhere between the stone and sky I felt that mountain peace inside
