The Story Behind Bound in Something Dark
This song came from a childhood nightmare that somehow stayed with me for decades. I remember a dark book, wax or something ritual-like across the cover, and in my child’s mind I think it may even have identified itself as a Satanic Bible. I am careful with that detail because memory is not a recording. After this many years, some of the imagery may have sharpened, shifted, or been embellished. What I do know is that the fear was real enough that I went to my mom and talked it through with her until I calmed down.
Coming back to that memory as an adult led me somewhere more interesting than trying to decide whether the dream had a supernatural explanation. I kept returning to the question I had even then: was I being warned, tempted, or simply frightened by something my mind created? I still do not pretend to know. The song lives in that uncertainty.
What stayed useful to me was the idea of a healthy fear of evil. I do not mean living afraid or assuming darkness is hiding behind everything. I mean recognizing that choices can have consequences, and that dismissing every warning as irrational is not necessarily wisdom. DrownWake gave me the right place for that thought because the project can carry darkness, spiritual tension, and resolve without having to explain everything away.
Creative Notes
The title took a few passes. I liked the personal angle of The Book I Showed My Mother, but it felt more like a working title. Bound in Something Dark was stronger because “bound” could point to the physical book while also carrying a sense of attachment and consequence without spelling the song out.
The musical version that clicked stayed close to 76 BPM and let the bass do much of the melodic work. I kept distorted baritone guitar, octave fuzz bass, a tom-heavy march, gated snare, layered vocal harmonies, analog tape saturation, plate reverb, and a gradual build. I explored more gothic, doom, progressive, industrial, and post-metal variants, but the arena-rock and alternative-metal balance had the best combination of weight and clarity.
The cover direction also needed a correction. My first concept drifted away from the established DrownWake look, so I brought it back to the cinematic realism of The Weight of the Dead and The Quiet Trial: monumental stone architecture, a lone figure, controlled ember light, and a single ominous object. I used ChatGPT to help explore the title, draft, style variants, and visual treatments, then kept narrowing the material toward the version that felt most like DrownWake.

There was wax upon the cover Hardened shapes I couldn’t name Nothing on the book reflected Nothing flickered nothing changed
It seemed to name itself in letters Plain enough for me to read I was far too young to understand it Old enough to feel the warning underneath
Why was I shown it? Why did it come? Was something warning me Or asking what I’d become?
Bound in something dark Sealed beneath the wax I knew enough to fear it Before I knew the facts
Was it there to warn me Or see what I would choose? I only knew I shouldn’t touch What was bound in something dark
I carried it into the waking Found my mother told her all The cover and the words upon it How the fear had made the whole room small
She didn’t claim to know the meaning She didn’t tell me I was wrong She held me until walls were only walls And I could breathe and carry on
But I kept wondering Why it was me Whether something called me closer Or told me what to leave
Bound in something dark Sealed beneath the wax I knew enough to fear it Before I knew the facts
Was it there to warn me Or see what I would choose? I only knew I shouldn’t touch What was bound in something dark
The years erased a thousand mornings Games we played and summer days But not that book without a glimmer Not the question that it raised
I do not fear the night like childhood I don’t shake at every sign But I have learned that fear can guard us When the world says every door is fine
Not every fear is meant to own you Not every warning makes you weak Some things enter dressed as answers Some things borrow sacred speech
Some doors close behind the curious Some stains survive the smallest spark And every choice is bound to something Some are bound in something dark
Bound in something dark Sealed beneath the wax I knew enough to fear it Before I knew the facts
I still don’t know what showed me Or what it wanted from my heart I only know I carried out A healthy fear of what is dark
My mother held me through the night Until the room became the room But somewhere underneath the years That unopened book still waits
Bound in something dark
