The Story Behind Everything Tells a Story
This song began during a solo trip into the Sierra Nevada. I had gone up without much expectation, just wanting mountain air and a day to explore. What surprised me was how quickly the day turned into a running exercise in observation.
I kept noticing evidence of stories everywhere. Some trees carried old fire scars, others had survived. Water on exposed granite changed the way the rock caught the light. Mud, ruts, erosion, regrowth, birds, insects, wind, thermals, and distant terrain all suggested something about what had happened there and what was happening now. The more I paid attention, the more questions I had.
That became the core idea for the song. Curiosity changes what I see. When I slow down enough to notice details, I start asking why something looks the way it does, how it got there, what survived, what changed, and what I might be missing. Those questions often lead somewhere useful, whether that means better understanding, a new idea, or creative inspiration.
The song is not really about decoding nature as though every observation has a single answer. It is about being awake to what is around me. Sometimes the most interesting part is simply noticing that there is a story there at all.
Fun Fact
The visual direction for the cover came from a photograph I took during the same mountain trip that inspired the song. The weathered tree, rock ledge, valley, and distant terrain already felt like a visual version of the idea before I ever treated the image as cover art.
Creative Notes
I decided early that I wanted this to work like one of my narrative RoyRoy songs rather than as a broad philosophical statement. I used the real progression of the mountain day as the backbone, then refined the writing section by section so the larger idea could emerge through observation instead of being explained all at once.
A number of lines changed during that review because I wanted the language to stay concrete and conversational. I also kept revising the final thought until it felt less like an instruction and more like an extension of the central idea: the world can seem to speak back when I am paying close enough attention.
The cover direction stayed equally grounded. Rather than inventing a symbolic scene from scratch, I used my own photograph from the day as the visual foundation and kept the design clean, square, and natural for the final release.

Pulled out early, sun already warm Steam off the road, remnants of a storm Didn’t need fixing, didn’t need space Just rolled with the miles at an unhurried pace
Truck full of gas, nowhere to go Let the world move around me, just taking it slow Turned off the engine, let the silence speak There’s a different kind of truth when you stop and you see
Every scar in the granite, every bend in the trees Every line in the dirt’s got a reason to be If you slow down enough, it starts talking to you Everything tells a story when you want it to
Black and blonde trunks where the fire came through Some stood their ground, some faced a fiery doom Dead gray spires and the ones still alive All telling the tale of who made it, who tried
Saw a deer in the distance, quail in the brush Heard birds in the trees, not a hint of a hush When they suddenly go quiet, trouble may be near But the hills were alive, said there’s nothing to fear
Every scar in the granite, every bend in the trees Every line in the dirt’s got a reason to be If you slow down enough, it starts talking to you Everything tells a story when you want it to
Climbed down a trail I’d been thinking about Year or more passing, just mapping it out Got to the edge, saw a whole different way Funny how distance can change what you say
There’s a tree by a rock where it shouldn’t have grown Found just enough to survive on its own Reached for the sky but ran out in the end There’s a line between strength and the place that you’re in
And the crows ride the wind like they’re part of the sky Not fighting the current, just letting it fly Made me think maybe I’ve been doing it wrong Trying too hard instead of just moving along
Every scar in the granite, every bend in the trees Every line in the dirt’s got a reason to be If you slow down enough, it starts talking to you Everything tells a story when you want it to
So I sit with my coffee, just taking it in My senses wide open, where I’ve been Turns out the answers ain’t buried or far They’re written everywhere, right where you are
Everything tells a story You just gotta listen like it’s talking to you
