The Story Behind Healthy Enough
The idea started with one of those things parents have said forever: if I could take my child’s pain, I would.
I started wondering what happens if technology eventually makes some version of that possible. Not just donating an organ, but transferring more and more of what makes a healthy body useful. At first the idea still has love at the center of it. Someone willingly gives something of themselves so another person can live.
Then the thought turns.
Once healthy human material becomes transferable, it also becomes valuable. Once it becomes valuable, someone will build a system around obtaining, preserving, and selling it. The same technology that could let a parent make an extraordinary sacrifice could also let someone with enough money extend a life by taking time, youth, or physical capacity from someone with no real choice in the matter.
That was the part I wanted Drown Wake to live inside. The darkness is not just the technology. It is the moral inversion underneath it: a language of care and mercy surviving even after the sacrifice stops being voluntary.
Creative Notes
The first versions were more direct, aggressive, and explanatory. I kept shortening the song and moving it toward a more cinematic soundtrack approach, where the larger system is mostly implied through images rather than described.
I also pushed the worldbuilding far enough to ask a practical question: if these bodies are valuable because they are healthy, how are they kept strong instead of simply wasting away? That led to the idea of active somatic maintenance, controlled movement, and constructed experiences that keep the body functioning. Most of that technical framework stayed behind the song rather than inside it.
I experimented with making the chorus more literal, but the final version kept the central refrain more symbolic and let the ending carry the sharper moral statement about purchased longevity and involuntary sacrifice. The visual direction also moved firmly underground, with adult bodies being maintained inside a clinical system while a dreamlike outdoor world exists as part of the illusion.
Lyrics
They keep the winter underground Where nothing ever grows White light falling without warmth On rows and rows and rows
No one says what waits below No one has to know Only that the doors stay shut And something keeps the whole world whole
Healthy enough To carry the night Healthy enough To keep someone in the light
Something is taken Something remains Somebody wakes Somebody changes names
Healthy enough Healthy enough
There are bodies taught to wander Through a world they never chose Running somewhere in the sunlight Where their dream-like grass grows
Somewhere someone calls it mercy Somewhere someone signs the page And the silence keeps on moving Underneath the polished cage
Healthy enough To carry the night Healthy enough To keep someone in the light
Something is taken Something remains Somebody wakes Somebody changes names
Healthy enough Healthy enough
If love could cross the distance If youth could change its skin
Would we still call it mercy If we knew who lived within
Healthy enough To carry the night Healthy enough To keep someone in the light
Something is taken Something remains Somebody wakes Somebody wears the change
Healthy enough Healthy enough
The doors stay white The bodies learn to run
And someone buys more time With years another never chose to give
