The Story Behind Hollow Haven's Pulse
Hollow Haven’s Pulse was the second song I made for Nebula’s Pulse, and it was really the point where the project began turning into something larger.
Starlit Wonder’s Pull had started with a much more abstract idea. It was about physics, gravity, consciousness, love, and that feeling of looking at the universe and wondering what connects all of it. Hollow Haven’s Pulse moved from that philosophical space into an actual future.
The premise was simple. Something terrible has happened to Earth. Humanity survives, but surviving means leaving.
The people in the song eventually reach an asteroid and begin turning it into a home. They hollow it out, use its rotation to create gravity, mine what they need from the rock, build protected living spaces, and bring green life into a place that had never held it before.
I liked the contrast in that idea. An asteroid is about as inhospitable and lifeless as a place can be, but inside it humanity creates shelter, movement, air, plants, memory, and eventually a civilization. The thing that looks dead from the outside becomes alive on the inside.
At that point I was not yet working from the detailed Nebula’s Pulse chronology that developed later. I had not mapped every discovery, mistake, consequence, or stage of the journey that would eventually explain why humanity had to leave Earth.
That came afterward.
As the project developed, the story became much more specific. Humanity discovers ancient technology buried on Earth, learns to use material and capabilities it does not completely understand, and eventually triggers consequences far beyond what anyone anticipated. The technology that appears to offer extraordinary progress also contains the path out. What initially looks like a discovery story becomes a survival story.
That later arc eventually leads humanity toward the asteroid belt and toward the kind of civilization Hollow Haven’s Pulse had already imagined.
Because of that, I do not think of this song as a literal first chapter of the later storyline. It is more interesting than that. It is an early glimpse of the future before I knew exactly how the characters were going to get there.
The rest of Nebula’s Pulse slowly began filling in the space between Earth and the hollow haven.
Creative Notes
Hollow Haven’s Pulse began as a direct science-fiction songwriting exercise. The concept was built around making an asteroid habitat feel physically believable enough to support the fiction: hollowing the interior, using rotation for artificial gravity, mining the surrounding rock, and introducing biodomes and plant life into an otherwise lifeless environment.
The emotional progression was intentionally grief to resolve to awe. The arrangement followed the established Nebula’s Pulse sound: ethereal female vocals, atmospheric guitars, deep bass, sparse drums, ambient pads, and layered harmonies as the song expands.
At the time, the larger Nebula’s Pulse chronology had not yet been mapped. That came later, which gave the song an interesting retrospective role in the catalog. It had already imagined one possible future for humanity before the later songs began explaining how humanity might actually get there.
The visual work around the song also helped establish the early Nebula’s Pulse identity: deep indigo space, magenta and lavender nebula light, pulse imagery, orbital forms, and asteroid textures. That combination became part of the project’s broader visual language.

From the ashes of our blue cradle’s fall Flames licked the skies, shadows claimed it all We fled the storm on wings of fire and steel Through the black veil, where wounds refuse to heal
Echoes of home in the void’s cold embrace Drifting toward rock, our last saving grace
In the hollow heart of stone we carve our fate Spinning worlds from dust, defying the weight Seeds of humanity bloom in the dark Asteroid haven, igniting the spark Through endless night, we rise anew Colony’s pulse, forever true
Tunnels weave through ancient cosmic bone Mining the veins where new life is sown Biodomes glow with fragile green light Breathing the stars, we conquer the night
Feel the turn that binds us to the core From tragedy’s end, we open the door
In the hollow heart of stone we carve our fate Spinning worlds from dust, defying the weight Seeds of humanity bloom in the dark Asteroid haven, igniting the spark Through endless night, we rise anew Colony’s pulse, forever true
Memories fade like Earth’s distant glow But in this rock, our legacy grows Awe in the spin, serenity found Devotion to life, eternally bound
Haven in the hollow… humanity’s fire… Through the void… we endure… forever…
