The Story Behind Missing Time
“Missing Time” began during a day in the Sierra when lack of sleep had made ordinary word recall noticeably less reliable. While thinking about memory, neurological health, and the unsettling experience of briefly not being able to retrieve familiar words, another observation entered the picture: an aircraft had been repeatedly circling over the mountains.
Those unrelated details collided into a fictional question. What if someone investigating something terrible began discovering gaps in their own memory? What if evidence started appearing that seemed to implicate them, and they could no longer be certain whether they were being framed or whether something was happening during the time they could not remember?
That idea became a psychological thriller rather than an autobiographical song. The real experience supplied the question, not the events. “Missing Time” follows the fear created when objective evidence and personal memory stop agreeing, while deliberately leaving room for doubt about what is actually true.
For Drown Wake, it opens another form of conflict. The threat is not an external enemy that can simply be confronted. It is uncertainty itself, and the possibility that the person searching for the truth may no longer be able to fully trust the mind doing the searching.
Creative Notes
The concept was deliberately moved away from a literal account of the original observation and developed as fiction for Drown Wake.
The active musical direction centers on arena rock and alternative metal at 76 BPM, with a bass-led melody, distorted baritone guitar, octave fuzz bass, tom-heavy drums, gated snare, smoky midrange vocals, layered harmonies, analog texture, and a gradual build with a strong pre-chorus lift.
The cover direction followed the psychological-thriller approach. The finished concept uses a burned mountain road, a lone figure, ghosted double exposure, surveillance framing, timestamp imagery, and video-glitch artifacts to visually suggest fractured memory and unreliable evidence without resolving the story.
