November Morning

A single by Drown Wake. An unexpectedly warm November morning leaves me grateful to be here, and wishing I could stay a little longer.

The Story Behind November Morning

In honor of our nearly forgotten holiday, Thanksgiving, I’ve returned to gratitude from several directions. Season to Be Grateful approached it through the season itself. Soak It In was concerned with paying attention while life is happening. Against Impossible Odds looked at the extraordinary fact of being alive at all. For November Morning, I wanted to stay much closer to the ground: one unexpectedly warm morning, and the pleasure of simply being there.

The more I enjoyed that ordinary moment, the more I wanted time to keep opening up ahead of me. I could feel how easily gratitude and uncertainty could sit together. In that peaceful setting I embraced both.

The Weight I Didn’t Know had come from another thread of gratitude, one concerned with the easing of familiar pressure. This was a different feeling. There was nothing to solve, and no need to make a lesson out of it. The morning was enough to begin with.

Creative Notes

The earliest drafts explained too much and stayed too close to a literal description of the scene. I tried several revisions before finding language that could suggest the feeling without constantly naming it. I chose Drown Wake after considering other artist directions. Some early style tests were too fast and pushed his low, smoky vocal away from the sound I wanted, so the direction shifted toward slower phrasing and an unhurried arrangement.

Two other songs informed what I was listening for, without serving as templates: the warmth and restraint of Sivra Dark’s Old Wine in New Bottles, and the gradual emotional lift I love in Loriena Drift’s Held by the Light. The cover artwork also needed a course correction. The first sunlit concept did not carry Drown Wake’s established branding; later versions restored the distressed wordmark, weathered border, and more textured visual character.

Lyrics

The year is getting older But the air forgot somehow There’s a little spring in November And it’s all around me now

The sun comes through the branches I let the morning take its time There’s nothing here to figure out Nothing I need to find

And somewhere in the quiet Family crosses my mind I let the thought stay with me And watch the morning light

November morning You caught me off my guard I wasn’t looking for a reason To love this life so hard

And I know I can’t hold on To everything I want to keep But there’s a whole lot more I’m hoping for And a little more of this I need

November morning Don’t hurry away from me

I’ve had days I wished were over Days I wanted back again Funny how the ones that stay with you Aren’t always what you planned

And something about this sunlight Makes the years ahead feel close Like there’s still so much worth finding In a world I barely know

November morning You caught me off my guard I wasn’t looking for a reason To love this life so hard

And I know I can’t hold on To everything I want to keep But there’s a whole lot more I’m hoping for And a little more of this I need

November morning Don’t hurry away from me

I don’t know what comes after I don’t know how far I’ll go There are things I wish I understood And things I’ll never know

But I can feel the warmth around me And the years that brought me here And for a moment all I want Is another morning like this one

November morning You caught me off my guard I wasn’t looking for a reason To love this life so hard

I know there’s no forever I know the days move on But something in this ordinary light Makes me want a thousand more

November morning Don’t hurry away from me

The sun is getting higher I’m still sitting here November morning I’m glad that I am here
