The Story Behind Save the Thunder
I had been noticing how much real emotional energy can be spent on things that are designed to provoke us. Some experiences create fear, tension, anger, or intensity very effectively, but that does not necessarily make them meaningful.
What stayed with me was the idea that becoming more selective does not mean becoming less sensitive. In some ways it means the opposite. I would rather preserve that capacity for things that are real enough to deserve it: nature, another person, difficult truth, grief, awe, and the moments that actually belong to my life.
That thought eventually became a weather metaphor. Artificial intensity became something like painted lightning or a manufactured storm, while real thunder represented the experiences I still want to be capable of feeling deeply. That distinction became the center of Save the Thunder.
Creative Notes
I originally approached this as a darker Drown Wake idea, but the concept proved broad enough that I could hear several of my Artists carrying it in very different ways. The version that surprised me was an indie-folk treatment built around laid-back fingerpicked acoustic guitar, a gentle brushed pulse, close vocal, restrained dynamics, warm dry production, subtle room ambience, and a gradual lift at the end.
That arrangement was intentionally out of character for Drown Wake. Instead of surrounding the song with more intensity, I let the production practice the restraint the song was talking about. The result felt strong enough that I decided to release the acoustic version.
The artwork followed the same direction. I kept the established Drown Wake visual language, but softened it into an expansive storm landscape with an acoustic guitar and a solitary figure rather than the harsher industrial or gothic environments used on some earlier covers.

Painted lightning on the wall A borrowed scream a staged freefall I let the shadows raise my pulse For cardboard storms and nothing else
Every siren knew my name Every flicker fed the flame Till I could feel the wire burn For something I would never learn
Save the thunder for the sky Save the shaking for what’s alive I’ve spent enough of myself On fires that never gave me light
Let the false alarms go quiet Let the painted weather die I don’t want to lose the feeling Save the thunder for the sky
Rooms get louder after dark Faces blur around the edges Everybody turns up larger Than the person underneath it
Maybe mercy leaves some room For the things that don’t resolve I don’t need another monster Drawn in black against the wall
Save the thunder for the sky Save the shaking for what’s alive I’ve spent enough of myself On fires that never gave me light
Let the false alarms go quiet Let the painted weather die I don’t want to lose the feeling Save the thunder for the sky
Let the real wind move me Let the bad news take its time Let a voice across the table Be complicated and still be mine
Let the mountain break the silence Let the sunlight hit my eyes If something’s going to reach me Let it earn the right
Save the thunder for the sky Save the breaking for real life There are things worth being wounded by And things that only imitate
Let the false alarms go quiet I have nothing left to prove I don’t want to feel less deeply I just want to choose
Save the thunder for the sky
