The Story Behind Soak It In
I had been thinking about how easy it is to move through ordinary life without really noticing it. Familiar rooms, voices, weather, routines, and small moments can feel almost invisible because we assume they will still be there tomorrow.
“Soak It In” grew from that tension. I did not want to write a song that told the listener to be afraid of what might disappear. I wanted something quieter: a reminder to be present while life is actually happening.
That restraint is part of why the song belongs to Drown Wake for me. There is darkness behind the idea, but it never needs to take over the room. The song is really about attention, gratitude, and the strange way time can make an ordinary moment feel precious only after it has passed.
Creative Notes
The first version of this idea belonged to a RoyRoy Genkins direction and was tied more directly to a day in the mountains. I eventually realized the phrase had more power when I removed the travel narrative and let it become a quieter meditation on presence and impermanence. That shift moved the song naturally to Drown Wake.
The arrangement changed the song as much as the rewrite did. I kept it as an acoustic rock ballad with a close, natural vocal, then let a stand-up piano anchor the harmony and restrained cello widen the choruses and bridge. The piano and cello gave the final version the emotional depth I was looking for.

Play the song while you follow the lyrics.
Morning moves across the ceiling Dust turns slowly in the light Someone’s coffee in the kitchen Rain still drying from the night
Your hand rests warm against the table A car goes by out on the street Nothing here is asking for attention Nothing here is meant to keep
Soak it in The light across your skin The sound of someone laughing From another room again
Soak it in Before the moment moves You don’t know what you’re keeping Till it’s something you can lose
There are voices you stop hearing Because you know them far too well There are rooms you walk through daily Till they turn into somewhere else
There are ordinary seconds You would never think to save Until one day they come back shining From a place you cannot name
Soak it in The light across your skin The sound of someone laughing From another room again
Soak it in Before the moment moves You don’t know what you’re keeping Till it’s something you can lose
No one tells you which one matters Which small hour will remain Which familiar thing will vanish And return to you as pain
So while the window still is open While the voices still come through Let the ordinary touch you Like you already knew
Soak it in The light across your skin The sound of someone laughing From another room again
Soak it in Before the moment moves You don’t know what you’re keeping Till it’s something you can lose
Soak it in While all of it is here The warmth the rain the voices The things you almost never hear
