The Story Behind The Same Second
The Same Second is directly connected to Gold Underneath, but it came from looking back at that experience rather than trying to recreate it.
Gold Underneath began with an unusually vivid dream that woke me because of awe rather than fear. That was rare enough for me that I immediately knew I wanted to preserve what had happened. After I sat down and the emotion really hit me, I wrote down the exact time and date: 3:58 AM on February 4, 2026.
At the time, I remember wondering whether the moment was connected to something outside of me. Had something happened somewhere else at that exact time? Had something happened to someone I loved? The experience felt significant enough that my mind went there almost immediately.
Much later, while listening to Gold Underneath, I started thinking about that timestamp again. What else was happening in the world at 3:58 AM? Someone was probably being born. Someone was losing someone. Somebody was making a decision that would change a life. Someone was laughing, grieving, driving an empty road, sitting beside a hospital bed, or experiencing a private moment that would become unforgettable to them.
I do not need those events to have been mystically connected to mine for the thought to matter. What stayed with me was the realization that all of us are moving through these intensely personal realities at the same time. A moment can feel completely singular from inside one life while billions of other lives are unfolding alongside it.
That reflection landed during a period when I had already been thinking deeply about meaning, creativity, and the direction of my life. Music had become far more important to me than I ever expected, not as a financial pursuit, but as a way to learn, express myself, process experience, and stay connected to a better part of who I want to be. I was also noticing the question of meaning arriving from unexpected directions, including things shared with me by my son and even a Viktor Frankl reference in a newsletter that normally stays focused on technology, investing, and finance.
At the same time, I was looking backward with much clearer eyes. There are past states of mind, especially moments shaped by anger, frustration, or fear, that now seem almost unreal to me. I am grateful to feel that some of those chapters are closed. I also found myself looking forward and realizing how much professional potential may still be ahead of me, especially given the technology, experience, and relationships available now.
Then I caught myself asking a more important question. Why should the next great part of my life be defined by another business achievement?
That thought clarified a lot for me. I would not trade time with my family for it. I would not trade the mountains for it. I would not trade solitude, reflection, or the creative life I have discovered. Those things are not rewards that fit around the edges of achievement anymore. They are part of the life itself.
That is what The Same Second ultimately became for me. I started by wondering what else might have happened at one exact moment in time. I ended up thinking about what that moment had changed in me, and what I want to protect as I move forward. I do not need to solve the experience anymore. What matters is that it left me with a clearer sense of where I want to return when noise, ambition, anger, or distraction begin pulling me away from what matters most.
Fun Fact
The handwritten timestamp used in the cover concept is not decorative. Joe recorded the dream at 3:58 AM on February 4, 2026, and that real timestamp eventually became one of the central creative anchors for The Same Second.
Creative Notes
My first attempts at this song stayed too close to Gold Underneath. They were still describing the experience itself, which made the new song feel repetitive. I eventually shifted the entire perspective backward in time. Gold Underneath could remain inside the original experience, while The Same Second could be written by someone looking back and trying to understand what had endured.
I reviewed the lyric section by section and kept simplifying lines that sounded more explanatory than natural. Near the end, I added a very short closing section distilled from some of the strongest statements that came out of the note-taking session. I wanted those final thoughts to function almost like reminders to myself when I hear the song, without turning the ending into a speech.
The artwork went through a similar evolution. I first explored using the actual room where I had been sitting while dictating later notes, including the view through the windows toward the oak trees. I liked the personal connection, but the final direction became more symbolic: a quiet predawn room, an open notebook, the real 3:58 AM timestamp and February 4, 2026 date, and a contemplative figure held slightly out of focus. It keeps the factual anchor while letting the image feel more like memory than documentation.

I don’t think about it like I used to Not like something I need to explain It’s not a question hanging in the air Or a moment I have to name
But every now and then it finds me In the middle of an ordinary day Like a thread I didn’t notice Still running quietly through everything
That second still lives somewhere in me Not in words but in the way I see I don’t chase it, I don’t need to know It shows up in the things I let go I stopped asking what it meant back then I just feel what it made of me That second still lives somewhere in me
I used to wonder what was happening Beyond the walls I couldn’t see If something turned across the distance At the very same time as me
If somewhere someone felt it breaking Or something opening up wide If the world had shifted slightly While I was changing on the inside
That second still lives somewhere in me Not in proof or in certainty Not a signal I could trace or find Just a quiet shift in the way I’m wired I don’t need it to align the world Or explain what I can’t see That second still lives somewhere in me
And time has a way of softening The need to trace it back that far It’s less about what else was moving More about who I became through it
I carried something forward from it That I didn’t have before Not a sign or revelation Just a different way to move through it
That second still lives somewhere in me In the space where I used to reach For an answer I could hold in hand Now I’m letting it be what it is I don’t need to define the line Or decide what it should be That second still lives somewhere in me
I know what matters now
I know what I won’t trade
I know when to speak
And I know where to return
