We Found the Switch
A single by Nebula's Pulse. A Nebula's Pulse song about reaching a technological tipping point, when advances in AI, manufacturing, science, and creative tools begin giving individuals capabilities that only recently would have seemed inaccessible.
We Found the Switch started with a pretty simple realization while I was driving into the mountains. I was thinking about how fortunate we are to be alive at this particular moment, because some of the technologies becoming available to ordinary people are advancing so quickly that it no longer feels like normal incremental progress.
One of the clearest examples for me was fabrication. In late 2023, I bought a Wazer waterjet because I needed a reliable way to cut relatively thin metal. At the time I had also looked at a laser, but the laser that could do what I needed was substantially more expensive. Only a couple of years later, I found myself ordering multiple laser systems, plus the supporting equipment, for less than that earlier machine would have cost, while gaining a dramatically broader range of capabilities.
That comparison really struck me. It was not just that one machine had gotten cheaper. Additive manufacturing, lasers, digital fabrication, software, AI, and automation were all moving forward at the same time.
I have been experiencing the same thing with AI. It has changed what I can personally research, design, write, build, explore, and manage. It has also changed how I work with other people. In my business, it helped me step away from roles I had been holding onto for years and gave some of my best employees more room to grow. In my creative life, it gave me a way to take photographs, spoken notes, observations, memories, and half-formed ideas and turn them into music.
That became the idea behind We Found the Switch.
The switch is not one invention. It is the moment when enough technologies start reinforcing one another that the change becomes something larger. We move from having better tools to having entirely new kinds of personal agency.
Because this is Nebula’s Pulse, I took that real observation and pushed it outward. What does this kind of change mean for scientific discovery? What happens when individuals and small teams can do things that once required enormous institutions? What happens when our ability to create, understand, simulate, manufacture, and explore all accelerate together?
Within the Nebula’s Pulse story, this is the second song in the actual narrative arc and the third Nebula’s Pulse song overall. The first song functions more as a precursor. This is where the story begins to move from philosophical possibility toward humanity actually acquiring the tools that may allow it to go somewhere new.
Creative Notes
The main creative challenge with We Found the Switch was keeping a very large idea from becoming a list of technologies.
The initial inspiration included AI, lasers, additive manufacturing, automation, and the broader acceleration of scientific and creative tools. Those were useful as source material, but the song worked better once they became symbols of something larger: the shrinking distance between imagination and execution.
That is also why the central phrase, We Found the Switch, became important. It gave the song a single metaphor for a much more complicated transition. The “switch” is not a literal invention. It is the point where enough advances begin reinforcing one another that the change starts to feel exponential.
Structurally, the song was originally longer and included pre-choruses. Because Nebula’s Pulse tends to work at a slower, more spacious pace, those sections added too much runtime without adding enough new information. Removing them made the song more direct and gave the larger images more room to breathe.
The visual development followed a similar path. I wanted the cover to stay clearly within the existing Nebula’s Pulse identity, but with a new central symbol. We first explored an aperture or cosmic opening, then refined it into a doorway with light on the other side.
That image captured the idea better than anything more technical could have. The song is ultimately about crossing a threshold. We may not know exactly what comes next, but the range of what is possible has changed.
Lyrics
We were born in the age of friction Steel on stone and breath on flame Every future moved in inches Every dream had a price in pain But the gears started whispering faster Circuits humming under skin Till the tools stopped taking orders And started pulling us in
We found the switch The world turned neon wide and bright Additive bones subtractive light Ideas forged milliseconds thin We are making more than we can name Becoming more than where we have been We found the switch And the universe finally let us in
We shaped matter like wet stardust Printed tensile dreams in air We carved time with threads of laser Made whole worlds from code and prayer Every limit felt nostalgic A relic dying in its sleep When one mind became an echo And the echo learned to leap
We found the switch The world turned neon wide and bright Additive bones subtractive light Ideas forged milliseconds thin We are making more than we can name Becoming more than where we have been We found the switch And the universe finally let us in
Now humanity feels taller Our shadows reach the outer rim We command the shape of atoms And the atoms learn from us again Every spark in every workshop Feels like starlight breaking clay No more crawling for tomorrow We architect it in a day
We found the switch The old world dimmed and disappeared We craft the future out of ether Carve the cosmos without fear We are not waiting on the heavens We are building there from where we stand We found the switch And turned the dream into something we could hold in our own hands
